It’s still my birthday — see the wrapping paper & camera box in the foreground? Dad took this shot. I remember those pajamas; they were pale yellow & soft as silk — more than likely a light polyester blend.

I got a camera for my 10th birthday, a Kodak Instamatic. I had just unwrapped my present — you can see the package of flash bulbs on the bed. I think it’s rather good, actually. ;)
Dixie, Corpus, 1970
I love this. It’s my first real best friend, Dixie DuBois, posing in our (award winning) back yard in Corpus Christi, Texas. I got a camera on my 10th birthday & judging by the date on the photo, this is probably from that first roll of film. Sadly, Dixie was killed by a drunk driver when she was just eighteen — so she’ll always be around this age to me & it’s how I’ll always remember her.
