another party at grandma’s, 1971
My recollection of this is hazy, because it’s a long time ago, but the wall across from Grandma’s bar — near the lady in the black pantsuit — was filled with personal notes & drawings from friends. And they weren’t tacked to the wall, but were actually written & drawn directly ON the wall. I vaguely recall my mom insisting that she cover this wall whenever her grandkids were visiting — whatever was there was not suitable for young eyes, but she didn’t always cover it, and I used to read it sometimes.
I know, pics or it didn’t happen. But sometimes, the memory is all we have.

Dixie, Corpus, 1970
I love this. It’s my first real best friend, Dixie DuBois, posing in our (award winning) back yard in Corpus Christi, Texas. I got a camera on my 10th birthday & judging by the date on the photo, this is probably from that first roll of film. Sadly, Dixie was killed by a drunk driver when she was just eighteen — so she’ll always be around this age to me & it’s how I’ll always remember her.

Mom & Me, 1971
No question about the date of this one — in July, 1971, we had the Yard of Month in Corpus Christi, Texas, as designated by the CC Council of Garden Clubs & the Chamber of Commerce. Here is a bit from below the fold:Davis was assisted in his landscape project by his wife and three children, ages 6, 8 and 11.
Oh boy, was he ever assisted. We DID have the greatest backyard in the neighborhood (not pictured), with a lattice-covered patio & putting green on one side & the children’s play area on the other. Also notable:
Incidentally, for edging around the flower beds, Mrs. Davis uses a spray of Varsol, a cleaning solvent marketed by Enco. It is not quite as neat as conventional grass edging, but Mrs. Davis said it is a lot easier.
That can’t have been good — for the environment OR my mom.
